Final Dev Diary – Shaping Fear Through Design

With our third and final Dev Diary, we take one last look at some of the creative and technical decisions behind Remothered: Red Nun’s Legacy and the process that helped bring the project to life.

In this episode, Game Director Antonio Cutrona and Art Director Patrik Lega discuss several of the pillars that guided development, from hypnosis as an interactive gameplay system to the visual language inspired by Italian horror cinema and the Sicilian locations that influenced the game’s environments.

Hypnosis plays a key role throughout Red Nun’s Legacy. Beyond its narrative significance, it becomes an active part of gameplay, allowing Susan to perceive clues, access hidden possibilities, and interact with the world in ways that influence progression.

The video also explores the evolution of stalker encounters. One of the team’s goals was to preserve the tension that defines Remothered while expanding player agency through new tools and opportunities for interaction.

On the technical side, the team discusses how Unreal Engine 5, including Lumen and Nanite, helped support the artistic direction of the project. These technologies allowed environments to react naturally to lighting conditions while providing the density and detail required to create believable locations inspired by real Sicilian architecture and landscapes.

The same attention was applied to character rendering.

By combining a refined production pipeline with Metahuman-based facial systems, the team was able to deliver more expressive performances while preserving the identity of characters that have become central to the Remothered universe.

The result is a project where gameplay, visual design, technology, and narrative themes work together toward a shared creative direction.
